Up to what point is space capable to constitute an interdisciplinary object ? On the basis of seemingly similar research aiming at thinking the question of public space starting from an observation of individual and collective practices, a geographer and a sociologist in the urban field, architect graduated in architecture, expose and confront, within the framework of this article, their differentiated manners to apprehend, conceive and engage space in a scientific reasoning. Thus, in alarming of the space dimension of the conflict situations, the geographical prospect forsakes to some extent their material aspect to favour the analysis of the moments during which emerge from the objects spatialized, stake of discussion and debates through procedures of designation and qualification. Other is the orientation taken by the sociological approach trying to clear up the social processes related to their space framework considered here as substrate. The setting in scene of the interactions between the whole of the actors who cross space, build it and make it up is thus observed by the means of the material support of the activities of the individuals. Actually, both of the readings converge to underline how, beyond their irreducibility, the common entry by means of the individuals and their languages are capable of creating a profitable ground of shared disciplinary interrogations. The whole of the reflexions is supported by a series of examples taken in the context of French cities and the Arab World cultural area.

Dans quelle mesure l'espace est-il à même de constituer un objet interdisciplinaire ? Partant de recherches en apparence similaires visant à penser la question de l'espace public à partir d'une observation de pratiques individuelles et collectives, un géographe et une sociologue de l'urbain, architecte de formation, exposent et confrontent, dans le cadre de cet article, leurs manières nettement différenciées d'appréhender, de concevoir et d'engager l'espace dans une démarche scientifique. Ainsi, en se préoccupant de la dimension spatiale des situations conflictuelles, la perspective géographique délaisse pour partie leur aspect matériel pour privilégier l'analyse des moments au cours desquels surgissent des champs de spatialisation autour d'objets de discussion et de débats, à travers des procédures de désignation et de qualification. Toute autre est l'orientation prise par l'approche sociologique qui s'attache, quant à elle, à mettre en lumière des processus sociaux liés à leur cadre spatial considéré ici comme substrat. La mise en scène des interactions entre l'ensemble des acteurs qui traversent l'espace, le construisent et le composent est ainsi observée par le biais du support matériel des activités des individus. En réalité, les deux lectures convergent pour souligner comment, au-delà de leur irréductibilité, l'entrée commune par le prisme des individus et de leurs langages est à même de constituer un terrain fructueux d'interrogations disciplinaires partagées. L'ensemble des réflexions est étayé par une série de cas concrets pris dans le contexte de villes françaises et du Monde Arabe.
