Nicolas Duhaut, « Quidnī dans la phrase latine », Vita Latina (documents), ID : 10.3406/vita.2021.1967
In this article we will highlight the reasons behind the odd discrepancy in the use of the negative interrogative adverb quidnī, which seems to be avoided by most authors and most of the roman literature, with the notable exceptions of Seneca the Younger, Tertullianus and roman comedy. We will start with a study of the negative interrogative adverb quidnī and its use by Terentius and Plautus as a register marker. Then we will show how quidnī is used as a linchpin in the logical demonstrations of Seneca. Finally, we will attempt to link together various uses of the adverb under a role as a «discursive facilitator » , that is, a conative connective rather than a logical connective.
