Résumé En

This article explores some aspects of the notion of Providence in Restoration nonconformist writings, with particular reference to stories of judgements befalling unrepentent sinners. Through the study of how a particular tale survives in manuscripts and printed accounts, it is possible to define some generic conventions and to show how a belief in Providence was shared across the religious spectrum by the conformist clergy, Presbyterians and even Independents. Finally, the study of a particular manuscript compiled by Matthew Poole shows how the idea of a scientific organisation of ministers to record the extraordinary manifestations of Providence was shared in 1657 by parties that were later to oppose each other during the Restoration.
