Al-Manṣūr and the Critical Ambassador

The Arabic narrative sources record a host of tales related to the founding of Baghdad and to its founder, the caliph al-Manṣūr. In one account, reported in several versions by al-Ṭabarī and al-Ḫaṭīb al-Bagdādī, a Byzantine ambassador arrives at al-Manṣūr’s court and criticizes the caliph’s new capital. The present paper suggests that the tale might have been used in the centuries following Baghdad’s founding to explain why the Abbasids behaved like kings by blaming direct Byzantine influence.

Les sources narratives arabes mentionnent beaucoup de récits qui se rapportent à la fondation de Bagdad et à son fondateur, le calife al-Manṣūr. Dans l’un de ces récits, rapporté par al-Ṭabarī et al-Ḫaṭīb al-Baġdādī, un ambassadeur byzantin arrive au palais d’al-Manṣūr et critique la nouvelle capitale du calife. Cet article suggère que ce récit aurait pu être utilisé dans les siècles suivant la fondation de Bagdad pour expliquer pourquoi les Abbassides se comportèrent comme des rois en blâmant l’influence directe des Byzantins.

ذكرت المصادر العربية قصصاً كثيرة تتعلق بتأسيس مدينة بغداد وبمؤسسها الخليفة المنصور. ونقرأ في قصّة من هذه القصص أوردها الطبري والخطيب البغدادي أن وافداً بيزنطياً زار قصر المنصور وبدأ ينتقد عاصمته الجديدة. فتقترح هذه المقالة أنه كان بالإمكان استخدام هذه القصة في القرون التي تلت بناء بغداد ليُشرح لماذا تصرف العباسيون تصرف الملوك بإلقاء اللوم على التأثير البيزنطي المباشر.
