In 146 BC the region of Elis appeared to have certain advantages. Firstly, the whole region was unified as a single polis, probably in 146 though the precise date is not absolutely certain. The territory of this polis was huge, by Greek standards, estimated to be some 2660 km2, and much of this land was very fertile, as it still is today.
