Greek fortifications of the fourth century bc In late Classical and early Hellenistic times the construction of fortifications intensified all over the Greek world and larger and more sophisticated systems were constantly developed. In terms of sheer size and cost this must count as one of the greatest achievements of Greek architecture. There are several reasons for this development.
