Os grandiosos festejos realizados em Évora por ocasião da fundação da Universidade, em 1559, encontram-se relatados em diversas fontes jesuítas que se complementam entre si, sendo um desafio situá-los nos locais onde decorreram, com base em estudos existentes sobre a evolução desses espaços. O facto de Évora ser, à época, a segunda mais importante cidade do reino – com a assídua presença da corte, com a construção de importantes monumentos civis e religiosos e, não menos importante, com o recente arcebispado entregue ao irmão do rei – criaria certamente um imperativo áulico em tais cerimónias, apesar da assumida vocação de sobriedade da Companhia de Jesus. Possivelmente por esse motivo as fontes são férteis em pormenores que habitualmente não ficariam registados, nomeadamente os relativos a certos momentos sonoro/musicais em espaços interiores e exteriores, no recinto da universidade e pelas ruas da cidade, em que participam não só os padres e os estudantes, mas também grandes senhores da nobreza, todo o clero e a generalidade do povo de Évora. E, inevitavelmente, também os músicos.

Great festivals held in Évora to celebrate the set up of the University in 1559 are documented in several Jesuit sources, being quite challenging to place these events in the appropriate sites where they took place, also with the support of many studies about the college buildings and how they expanded and developed. As Évora was, at that time, the kingdom’s second more important city – enhanced with the frequent presence of the Court, with the rising of important civil and religious monuments and with the recent creation of the archbishopric held by the king’s brother – this was probably the reason why pageantry was present in such ceremonies despite the usual Jesuit sobriety. That could be the reason why the sources reveal some details that usually wouldn’t be recorded, like those reporting sound or musical moments inside a building or in open air areas, in the university facilities and across the city, in which took part the priests and the students, lords and noblemen, all the clergy and the people of Évora, as well as some musicians.
