Depois de contextualizados, de forma genérica, os ambientes políticos do movimento regalista, analisado o debate parlamentar depois da revolução liberal e as medidas tomadas para a extinção das ordens regulares, é feito o balanço dos conventos de religiosas na província do Alentejo entre 1820 e 1858. São referidos também alguns dados a nível nacional. As conclusões tiradas deste estudo expressam os limites e a amplitude da conflitualidade entre o Estado Liberal e a Igreja bem como dão conta de alguns resultados decorrentes das decisões políticas assumidas durante o primeiro liberalismo português.

After a generic contextualization of the political environments of the regalism movement, and following the analysis of the parliamentary debate after the liberal revolution, and the subsequent measures taken in order to extinguish the regular orders, the balance of the nunneries in the province of Alentejo, between 1820 and 1858, is carried out. Some data on a national level are also referred. The conclusions taken from this study express the limitations and amplitude of the conflictuousness between Liberal State and Church, as well as give account of some results of the political decisions assumed during the first period of Portuguese Liberalism.
