September 2006 Xinjiang (Uyghur Autonomous Region) encircles Taklimakan, a vast cold desert, located between the Tian Shan mountain range in the north and the Kunlun mountain range in the south (about 1,000 km E-W and 500 N-S). Today, the desert runs alongside agricultural oases, which are situated along the banks of rivers flowing down from these mountains.
