L’auteur tente de dresser le bilan, au terme d’une dizaine d’années d’existence, des deux musées d’histoire créés en Allemagne, la Maison de l’histoire de la République fédérale de Bonn et le Musée historique allemand de Berlin. Ayant pour mission de gérer deux dimensions différentes du rapport au passé, les deux institutions, conçues avant la chute du Mur, ont été confrontées à une actualité politique susceptible de modifier les projets initiaux et la répartition des tâches prévue au départ. Le texte s’efforce notamment de montrer, d’une part, les interactions entre les présupposés politiques, les débats ayant accompagné l’élaboration des projets et les options techniques retenues dans les deux cas, et, d’autre part, les infléchissements successifs provoqués par une actualité politique insoupçonnée.

The author draws up a balance sheet at the end of ten or so years of existence of the two history museums recently founded in Germany, the Institute of History of the Federal Republic in Bonn and the German Historical Museum in Berlin. The two institutions, conceived before the fall of the Berlin Wall, with the mission of administering two different dimensions of the relationship to the past, were confronted with political events which risked modifying the initial projects and the allotment of tasks outlined at the start. This work particularly tries to show the interactions between the political presumptions, the debates which accompanied the elaboration of the projects and the technical options retained in the two cases on the one hand and on the other, the successive shifts provoked by unsuspected political events.
