Longtemps arborée comme un blason de l’historiographie française, la notion de « civilisation » a été abandonnée par les historiens depuis une vingtaine d’années, sans qu’un véritable retour critique soit véritablement effectué. Pour comprendre les ambiguïtés qui ont travaillé, sans cesse, les usages historiographiques de la notion, il faut, au-delà du moment braudélien, remonter à la genèse de la catégorie, au xviiie siècle, et envisager sa reprise par Lucien Febvre, dans le contexte intellectuel et politique des années 1930-1950. Le destin contrarié de la « civilisation » comme catégorie historiographique indique alors moins les dérives de l’européocentrisme que les apories d’une histoire qui se voudrait véritablement globale.

After being long brandished as one of the emblems of French historiography, the concept of « civilisation » was abandoned by historians about twenty years ago without any real attempts being made to produce a critical reassessment. In order to understand the ambiguities with which the historiographical use of the term has always been fraught, it is proposed here, leaving aside Braudel’s contribution, to go back to the genesis of the term in the 18th century before looking at its revival by Lucien Febvre in the intellectual and political context of the 1930s to the 1950s. The ups and downs in the use of the term « civilisation » as a historiographical category do not reflect the fluctuations of Eurocentrism as much as the stumbling-blocks involved in attempting to write a real world history of the term.
