Nicolas Dodier, « Les arènes des habiletés techniques », Éditions de l’École des hautes études en sciences sociales, ID : 10.4000/books.editionsehess.9903
On the basis of an ethnographic inquiry in a firm, the author examines how individual skills are exhibited in the use of objects. He analyses the way in which judgments on skill emerge in the work with machines. And he shows that these “arenas of skill” have a feedback effect on the use of objects. Under the pressure of such judgments, persons try to exploit the plasticity of these objects, in order to enhance their own qualities. This personal use leads to erase external marks and to reinforce the characteristics associated with the individual. These “arenas of skill” lead to a relationship with to rules concerning objects, quite different from the one observed in the legal field.
