Wallace Stevens and Paul Valéry are both meditative poets whose critical reputations involve their very cerebral concerns. At the same time that their poetry treats abstract ideas, they often write about the senses and the necessary relationship between sense and thought. It is, in large part, through the senses that we reach the ideas in these poets’ work.
