Ritrovamenti scultorei dall’area sacra del Tempio di Ercole

Il ritrovamento del tempio di Ercole fu la prima grande novità degli scavi condotti da Guido Calza in vista dell’Esposizione Universale del 1942. Ripercorrendo le indagini di quegli anni, e successivi, che interessarono tutta l’area sacra con i limitrofi edifici, sono presi in esame i materiali scultorei lì ritrovati tentando di definire meglio le possibili originarie collocazioni. In particolare si presenta il rilievo c.d. di Teseo e Arianna che, ritrovato nei pressi delle gradinate del tempio di Ercole, non ha finora avuto una vera edizione. In questa sede si propone una nuova interpretazione della scena raffigurata che rimanderebbe all’impresa di Ercole disceso negli Inferi per liberare Teseo e Piritoo. 

The discovery of the temple of Hercules was the first great novelty of the excavations conducted by Guido Calza in view of the Universal Exhibition of 1942. Retracing the investigations of those years, and the following ones, which involved the whole sacred area with the neighbouring buildings, the sculptural materials found there are examined trying to better define the possible original locations. In particular, there is the so-called relief of Theseus and Ariadne which, found near the steps of the temple of Hercules, has not yet had a real edition. Here we propose a new interpretation of the scene depicted that would refer to the feat of Hercules descending into the Underworld to free Theseus and Piritoo.
