Appunti per un’interpretazione dello sviluppo urbano del colle Aventino

Le fonti antiche narrano che l’Aventino fu il luogo in cui furono dedicati numerosi edifici templari, dai più antichi culti di età regia ai templi di età repubblicana e medio-repubblicana. La presenza stessa di culti legati alla plebe e l’emanazione della lex Icilia de Auentino publicando, che consolidò l’insediamento della plebe sul colle, sembrano aver decretato la futura vocazione residenziale del quartiere. La correlazione fra i due argomenti non trova riscontro nella cultura materiale e nella sopravvivenza dell’antico. Mentre l’insediamento residenziale ha lasciato tracce materiali che aiutano a ricostruire la forma del quartiere antico e la sua evoluzione nel tempo, al contrario l’archeologia non ha restituito quasi nulla delle strutture templari che pure devono aver determinato con la loro esistenza lo sviluppo urbanistico del colle in età repubblicana.

Ancient sources pass on that the Aventine was the place where numerous temples has been dedicated to divinities belonging to the old regal cults and subsequently to the cults of the Republican and Middle Republican age. The presence of cults linked to the plebs together with the promulgation of the lex Icilia de Auentino publicando which strengthens the settlement of the plebs on the hill seem to have decreed the residential status of the neighborhood. Unfortunately, the excavation evidence does not reflect the religious and residential character to the same extent. Traces of the residential settlement still survive under the ground while we have no evidence of religious buildings which, however, must have determined the urban development of the hill in the Republican age.
