En dépit d’une image stéréotypée d’un monde globalisé et ouvert, la notion de frontière ne cesse d’interpeller les chercheurs au travers de deux questions majeures : que deviennent alors les frontières entre espaces géographiques, linguistiques et culturels dans notre société cosmopolite, urbanisée, mobile ? Comment sont-elles produites, (re)produites et/ou configurées par les pratiques sociales ? À partir de disciplines aussi variées que sont la linguistique, la sociologie, l’anthropologie et la géographie, cet ouvrage propose de réfléchir à la façon dont les frontières sont repérées, conçues, ou encore produites par les pratiques des acteurs sociaux en interaction. Dès lors, elles ne sont plus appréhendées comme un produit fini et irrévocable, mais comme une matière en train de se faire, dessinée par une multiplicité d’acteurs et située dans une diversité de contextes.

Despite a stereotypical perception of a globalised and open world, borders always throw up two major questions for researchers: what happens to the boundaries between geographic, linguistic and cultural spaces in a globalised, cosmopolitan, dynamic and urbanised world? How are borders (re) produced and / or shaped by social practices? Adopting a multidisciplinary perspective which brings together approaches from sociology, anthropology and geography, this book offers a reflection on the way in which borders are identified, conceived, or produced in interaction, by the practices of social actors. Confronted with the powerful heuristic capacity of the notion of frontier, we follow a resolutely praxeological approach. Such an approach focuses on social practices and takes into consideration the historicity, and the inherently situated, embodied and material dimension of boundaries. Therefore, borders are no longer seen as a finished and irrevocable product. They are viewed as an ongoing process, drawn by a multiplicity of social actors and situated in a variety of contexts.
