ResumenEl presente escrito tiene por objeto hacer un recuento del desarrollo del topo, que por su gran antigüedad y amplia distribución geográfica se convierte en una suerte de símbolo pan-andino. Para tal propósito, se cuenta con una buena cantidad de información que nos permite esbozar una secuencia cultural para el altiplano y valles bolivianos y, en una perspectiva mayor, para el área Centro Sur Andina o circum Titicaca. Igualmente, nuestras propias indagaciones en el área intersalar Uyuni-Coipasa, en Warijana, en Kayun Amaya y en Taramaya han contribuido al incremento de especimenes, cuya procedencia está ahora mejor documentada que en el pasado. Se incluye un breve análisis de las voces aymaras usadas para referirse al topo y sus variantes. Se discutirá, además, acerca del significado social y económico del artefacto.

This article intends to make an account of the development of the topo, that given its great antiquity and wide geographical distribution becomes a sort of pan-Andean symbol. For such purpose, we have a good quantity of information that allows us to sketch a cultural sequence for the plateau and Bolivian valleys and, in a wider perspective, for the area of the Central South Andes or circum Titicaca. Also, our own inquiries in the area of Uyuni-Coipasa inter-salt lands, in Warijana, in Kayun Amaya and in Taramaya have contributed to the inventory of specimens whose origin is now better documented that in the past. I include a brief analysis of the Aymara words used to refer to the topo and its variants. I will discuss, also, about the social and economic meanings of the artifact.
