In matters of health, India in general seems to be in a very bad situation. The infant mortality rate is still very high (92 per thousand compared with 29 and 27 per thousand in China and Thailand respectively), and significant nutritional deficiencies persist. Tuberculosis, tetanus and intestinal problems remain endemic (and sometimes epidemic), while other infectious diseases suddenly appear or reappear on a large scale.
