Résumé 0

Backward, conservative, marginal, modest, even mediocre, as many adjectives generally applied to the architecture which appeared in the Western Alps between the XIIIth and XVIth centuries, being viewed through a prism forged from the Gothic architecture of the North of France by art historians. In fact, the alpine edifices testify to a respect of traditions, a permanence of forms, which answered the asserted will to perpetuate formulae having previously proved their efficaciousness and which are still up to date. This phenonomen attacks the very definition of the architecture in question and its specificity (specificities and shows how difficult it is to put it into a mould made out of a historical and artistic reality from elsewhere.
