En 1728 paraît en Hollande, sous le nom et à l’insu du théologien genevois Jean-Alphonse Turrettini (1671-1737), un traité De sacrae Scripturae interpretandae Methodo que l’auteur s’empresse de désavouer en raison des fautes matérielles qu’il contient, mais dont il reconnaît que le contenu lui appartient et est tiré de l’enseignement qu’il avait dispensé en 1709-1711 à l’Académie de sa ville natale. L’article dresse d’abord l’état de la question bibliographique en comparant l’imprimé de 1728 avec les sources manuscrites conservées à Genève et en présentant les éditions successives de l’ouvrage parues en Hollande et en Allemagne respectivement en 1775 et 1776. Il étudie par la suite le traité lui-même, et notamment l’horizon polémique dans lequel Turrettini inscrit son enseignement, les principes généraux qui doivent présider à l’interprétation de l’Écriture, qui ne diffèrent pas de ceux propres à la littérature profane, ainsi que les règles particulières qui s’appliquent aux différents genres littéraires des livres bibliques (histoire, prophétie, morale et doctrine). Ce faisant, l’analyse fait émerger certains points cruciaux du propos de l’auteur, tels que le rôle de la raison dans la pratique herméneutique, la nature de l’interprétation proposée ou le rapport aux courants enthousiastes et à l’orthodoxie réformée.

In 1728, under the name and without the knowledge of the Genevan theologian Jean-Alphonse Turrettini (1671-1737), a treatise De sacrae Scripturae interpretandae Methodo appeared in Holland. The author was quick to disavow it because of the material errors it contained, but he acknowledged that its contents were his own and were taken from the teaching he had given in 1709-1711 at the Academy of his native city. The article begins by comparing the printed version of 1728 with the manuscript sources preserved in Geneva and by presenting the successive editions of the work published in Holland and Germany in 1775 and 1776 respectively. He then studies the treatise itself, and in particular the polemical horizon in which Turrettini inscribes his teaching, the general principles that should govern the interpretation of Scripture, which do not differ from those proper to secular literature, as well as the particular rules that apply to the different literary genres of the biblical books (history, prophecy, morality and doctrine). In so doing, the analysis brings out certain crucial points in the author's discourse, such as the role of reason in hermeneutical practice, the nature of the interpretation proposed, or the relationship to enthusiastic currents and to Reformed orthodoxy.
