Ce chapitre examine l’institution des « hommes éminents » (big men) à travers leurs actions lors des échanges cérémoniels (magadl), part essentielle de la vie sociale des Gawigl, une société de la province Hautes-Terres occidentales de Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée. Il décrit une crise survenue lorsqu’un homme manqua à donner à ses affins le magadl pour ses enfants, menant son épouse au suicide. Un procédé (le magadl), qui normalement n’inclut que quelques participants, devint alors un grand événement organisé par les big men et impliquant une importante prestation.Les discours de ces big men, dont le statut dépend en grande partie de leurs talents rhétoriques, sont analysés. Leurs paroles jouent un rôle important lors des crises et des conflits qui requièrent un « alignement » des raisons et intentions de tous. Les big men agissent alors comme des entonnoirs qui condensent les réseaux de relations pour qu’ils se manifestent lors d’importants contextes socio-politiques.

This chapter examines the institution of “eminent men” (big men) through their actions during the ceremonial exchanges (magadl), that are essential for the social life of Gawigl, a society of the Western Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea. The article outlines a crisis when a man does not give the magadl for his children, which he owes to his affines, leading ultimately to the suicide of his wife. A process (the magadl for children), which is usually restricted to few participants, then became much more important and involved a much greater prestation, organised by big men.The article analyses in particular the speeches of these big men whose status depends to a significant degree on their ability to employ their rhetorical skills. Big men are particularly important in times of crisis and conflict that require for men to “align” the reasons and the intentions of all. They then act like funnels which condense a relational network to become effective in an important socio-political context.
