L’espace étudié est le territoire frontalier arabo-byzantin situé au nord du Bilād al-Šām (nord de la Syrie actuelle) entre les ier et ve siècles de l’Hégire (viie-xie siècles). Partir d’une frontière offre un angle de vue relativement pertinent pour l’étude des échelles spatiales. En effet, c’est très souvent sur un territoire de confins que se croisent de nombreuses influences mêlant intérêts locaux et globaux. Il s’agit ici de comprendre l’imbrication des échelles spatiales sur ces marges nord-syriennes créant un réseau d’acteurs interagissant entre eux par le biais d’alliances ou d’oppositions. Chacun projeta ses intérêts sur cet espace frontalier, modifiant ainsi profondément ses dynamiques spatiales. Trois points de vue sont à distinguer : l’échelle globale des califes et des empereurs, l’échelle régionale des émirs d’Alep et l’échelle locale des communautés frontalières.

The area under consideration is the frontier area between Arabia and Byzantium situated north of Bilād al Sām (in the North of today’s Syria) between the 1st and 5th centuries in the year of the Hijra (7th-11th Centuries). The view from the frontier gives one a relatively pertinent angle for the study of spatial scales, given that border areas witness a mixture of many influences where local and global interests intersect. We need to understand how the different spatial scales work together in these North Syrian Marches, producing a network of agents interacting with each other through alliances and conflicts. Each actor projects his interests on to this frontier, thereby profoundly changing its spatial dynamics. We can discern three distinct points of view : the global scale of the caliphs and the emperors, the regional scale of the emirs of Aleppo and the local scale of the frontier communities.
