Note sur le mot sulṭān dans l’Irak abbasside au xe siècle

Cette contribution à l’étude du vocabulaire politique arabe médiéval est consacrée à l’évolution du mot « sulṭān » dans l’Irak du xe siècle à partir d’un corpus de textes historiographiques couvrant cette période cruciale pour l’Empire abbasside. Si l’on insiste habituellement sur l’importance du xie siècle, au cours duquel ce mot devient un titre officiel, un examen attentif du contexte dans lequel il est employé fait apparaître le xe siècle comme une époque tout aussi déterminante pour l’histoire de ce mot. Elle voit évoluer les rapports entre ses différentes acceptions – autorité, pouvoir gouvernemental, mais aussi personne qui détient un pouvoir – selon un rythme qui reflète à la fois les bouleversements politiques que connaît alors le pouvoir bagdadien et l’émergence de nouvelles pratiques d’écriture de l’histoire.

This contribution to the study of the Arab political vocabulary in the Medieval period deals with the evolution of the word “sulṭān” in the Iraq of the 10th century through the study of a corpus of historiographical texts covering this crucial period for the Abbasid empire. The importance of the 11th century, when the term became an official title, is well-known. Nevertheless, a close examination of the context in which it is used shows that the 10th century was equally decisive with regard to the history of this word. This period witnessed the developments of different relationships between the various meanings of the word which can designate authority, governmental power or a person who exerts power. These developments are the reflection of both the political upheavals taking place under the Abbasids and of contemporary innovations in the writing of history.
