The island of Crete is well known for the many laws that were inscribed on stone in the archaic and classical periods. The most famous of these – the Gortyn Law Code – is unique among Greek inscriptions in its size and breadth of subjects, but we also have many other laws from Gortyn, as well as one or more laws from this period from eight other cities in Crete.
