Les hagiographes de la Normandie ducale ou le passé sans histoire

Cinquante Vitae ont été écrites en Normandie ducale, pour moitié aux Xe-XIe siècles, pour moitié au XIIe siècle. Celles de la première période ont toutes pris le passé le plus reculé pour cadre, et à une large majorité le VIIe siècle mérovingien. Or bien qu’exclusivement tournées vers un passé lointain, ces Vitae tranchent avec l’écriture hagiographique-historiographique du IXe siècle : on n’y trouve notamment ni armature chronologique solide, ni utilisation de sources historiques ou diplomatiques. Cette rupture bien perceptible entre l’hagiographie normande carolingienne et l’hagiographie de Normandie ducale ne peut pas être mécaniquement liée à un abaissement du niveau culturel : elle reflète plutôt une mise à distance du grand récit historique franco-centré, au prix d’une idéalisation de la royauté mérovingienne. Du reste, l’autonomisation de l’écriture hagiographique à partir du Xe siècle par rapport à l’écriture de l’histoire n’est pas limitée à la Normandie.

Fifty Vitae were written during the Ducal government of Normandy. All the texts written during the tenth and eleventh centuries take the most distant past as their framework, and by a large majority the Merovingian seventh century. However, these Vitae do not connect with this remote past using the same tools as the hagiography of the ninth century: they do not construct a solid chronological setup, nor quote historical sources, nor allude to diplomatic evidences. Such a difference with the Carolingian hagiography in Normandy does not point towards a drop in cultural standards: hagiographers choose to depart from the great Franco-centered historical narrative; they emphazise, but not create, this growing difference between the writing of history and hagiography that one observes elsewhere in the post-Carolingian realms.
