Earlier this year, a front page story in Variety announced the expected release of "an unprecedented number of pics" by black filmmakers: Thirteen films directed by African-Americans are scheduled for release in 1991. Twenty other films starring black actors are slated for release, the most since the explosion of the early'70s, when hundreds of so-called blaxploitation features were made.
