A. J. Smith’s 1971 edition of John Donne’s complete English poems in the Penguin English Poets series begins with fifty-five love lyrics arranged under the heading ‘Songs and Sonnets’. Right from the beginning of his edition Smith admits that ‘[n] o editor can be confident that he is printing just what Donne wrote’.
