Réflexions préliminaires sur les systèmes votifs aux sanctuaires de Kythnos

Plusieurs sanctuaires de la capitale antique de l’île de Kythnos nous sont connus par la prospection intensive qui fut conduite dans les années 1990. Au moins quatre sanctuaires ont été identifiés à l’intérieur de la cité antique, ainsi qu’un sanctuaire suburbain. Cinq années de fouilles (2002-2006) ont permis de dégager dans sa totalité la partie principale du sanctuaire de l’extrémité Nord du plateau médian. On peut donc comparer les trouvailles qui dérivent de deux méthodes de recherche différentes (prospection intensive et fouille systématique), et tenter d’identifier les divinités honorées. La majorité des sanctuaires urbains de Kythnos semblent avoir été dédiés à des divinités féminines. Les sources indiquent qu’Apollon, Aphrodite, Déméter, les Dieux de Samothrace et probablement Artémis, étaient parmi les divinités principales honorées dans la cité. Mais aucun témoignage direct ne permet de relier les sanctuaires connus avec ces cultes. Les dédicaces du sanctuaire de l’extrémité Nord du plateau médian sont ici présentées et comparées avec celles des autres sanctuaires, et notamment le sanctuaire de Déméter sur l’acropole. Il s’agit de saisir la nature du culte, le statut et l’identité des dédicants et quelques-unes des pratiques dédicatoires, surtout dans le sanctuaire qui a été fouillé.

Numerous sanctuaries of the ancient capital of Kythnos are known to us through the intensive urban survey of the 1990s. At least four sanctuaries have been identified within the limits of the fortification wall, and its close proximity. Five years of excavations (2002-2006) led to the thorough investigation of the sanctuary situated at the North extremity of the so-called Middle Plateau. Despite the limitations which are due to the different methods of research (intensive survey vs excavation), it has now become possible to compare the finds from the various sanctuaries of Kythnos and to try to address issues concerning the nature and identity of the honoured divinities. The majority of the Kythnian sanctuaries seem to have been dedicated to female divinities. The evidence indicates that among the divinities worshipped in the ancient city were Apollo, Aphrodite, Demeter, the Samothracian gods and probably Artemis. Nevertheless, there is no direct proof relating these sanctuaries to this evidence. In this paper we first discuss the various categories of finds present in the sanctuary of the North extremity of the Middle Plateau and then compare these with those of the other sanctuaries, especially the sanctuary of the acropolis, dedicated to Demeter. We aim to understand better the nature of the cult, the identity and the social status of the donors, and some of the dedicatory processes, especially in the former sanctuary, which has been excavated rather extensively.
