Water Culture at the Sanctuary of Amphiaraos at Oropos: A Quantitative Reexamination of Three Inscriptions

Three 4th-century inscriptions found in situ at the Sanctuary of Amphiaraos at Oropos constitute an instance of ancient “open government data,” providing access to public information on planned and implemented building projects. The inscriptions document the construction of a drainage system and a bath complex in detail, as well as the rehabilitation of a fountain and two bath complexes. They discuss the scope of work, budgetary and time constraints, and responsible individual, providing valuable information about the topography of the site and the history of its development. The complexity and adaptation of the hydraulic system, part of the expansion and transformation of the sanctuary, offer new insights into the evolution of ancient hydraulic science and on the different techniques used to store and distribute water and to influence the micro-climate of a site and its experience by visitors.

Trois inscriptions du IVe s. av. J.-C., découvertes in situ dans le sanctuaire d’Amphiaraos à Oropos, constituent un bon exemple de « transparence des données publiques », en donnant libre accès à l’information sur les projets de construction planifiés et mis en œuvre. Les inscriptions rapportent en détail la construction d’u système de drainage et d’un complexe de bains, de même que la réhabilitation d’une fontaine et de deux complexes de bains. Elles documentent l’objectif du travail, les contraintes de budget et de calendrier, les individus responsables et donnent également des informations précieuses sur la topographie du site et l’histoire de son développement. La complexité et l’adaptation du système hydraulique, qui font partie de l’expansion et de la transformation du sanctuaire, offrent de nouvelles perspectives sur l’évolution de la science hydraulique antique et sur les différentes techniques utilisées pour stocker et distribuer l’eau, ainsi que pour influer sur le micro-climat du site et son utilisation par les visiteurs.
