Le Greco traite de façon spécifique le paysage tolédan dans plusieurs de ses œuvres religieuses. On a diversement interprété ses mises en arrière-plan de la ville du Tage ou certains de ses traits métonymiques. Le paysage éloigné assure une relation spatiale qui construit le tableau et aiguise l’attention de l’œil du spectateur. Dans plusieurs écrits, le peintre de Tolède a commenté ces partis pris. L’exposition matérielle des tableaux explicite des effets de sens autant que des modalités d’appréhension visuelle. Cette fonctionnalité picturale est particulièrement mise à l’épreuve dans le célèbre Vue et plan de Tolède qui synthétise les jeux du regard rapproché dans le tableau.

El Greco has a particular way of portraying the cityscape of Toledo in several of his religious paintings. Different interpretations have been proposed to explain why the city on the Tagus River figures in the background and to make sense of certain metonymic features. The far-off landscape assures a spatial relationship that structures the painting; it focuses the attention of the viewer. In some of his writings, the painter from Toledo comments on his artistic choices. The material organisation of these paintings makes certain semantic effects more explicit as well as the ways in which they have been visualised. This functional dimension of the image is most strongly put to the test in El Greco’s famous View and Map of Toledo where a synthesis is proposed of the ways in which a close-up view operates within the canvas.
