La milice constitue le pilier principal de la défense du Canada. Grâce aux raids des miliciens, les colonies anglaises doivent disperser leurs forces, annihilant leur supériorité numérique. La guérilla s’avère efficace et constitue le seul obstacle valable aux renforts de troupes régulières britanniques qui s’accroissent. Elle dépend principalement du maintien des alliances avec les Amérindiens experts en petite guerre. Cependant, les négociations, menées notamment par William Johnson, neutralisent les systèmes d’alliances franco-indiennes. À ces succès diplomatiques s’ajoute la pression croissante des troupes anglaises et des colons anglo-américains. Dès lors, faute de renforts et de soutien matériel et logistique métropolitains, la Nouvelle-France se trouve condamnée.
