In 1850 a leader in The Scotsman proclaimed that Scotland was “the most drunken nation on the face of the earth” and that Glasgow was “the most guilty and offensive city in Christendom” (The Scotsman, 22 May 1850). Indeed very large quantities of drink, especially whisky, were consumed in Scotland in the nineteenth century.
