This essay complements a critical mass of historical scholarship about Segundo de Chomón, by bringing his extraordinary body of work as an early filmmaker into dialogue with film theory, and in particular with what Sergei Eisenstein wrote about animation. Though Eisenstein’s theories of montage (many written during the 1920s) continue to be widely read, his later writings, a number of which were incomplete at the time of his death, are generally far less familiar.
