Rédigé au xiie siècle en anglo-normand, Le Gracial d’Adgar est la première traduction en langue romane de Miracles de la Vierge. Inaugurant cette typologie littéraire en langue romane, dans laquelle l’édification et le plaisir sont combinés, l’œuvre méritait une étude détaillée sur le contexte culturel de création ainsi que sur la forme et le contenu de la collection. Le présent travail est une recension critique du livre de Jean-Louis Benoit, Le Gracial d’Adgar. Miracles de la Vierge, publié chez Brepols en 2012. En conformité avec le sous-titre « Dulce chose est de Deu cunter », J.-L. Benoit explore les détails de cette œuvre anglo-normande à vocation édifiante en tant qu’héritière de la production cléricale et hagiographique latine médiévale, sans renoncer à l’art et au plaisir de raconter.

Written in the twelfth century in Anglo-Norman, Le Gracial of Adgar is the first translation into Romance language of the Miracles of the Virgin Mary. Starting this literary typology in a Romance language, where edification and pleasure are combined, the collection deserved a meticulous study of the cultural context of creation as well as its form and contents. The present work is a critical review of Jean-Louis Benoit’s book: Le Gracial d’Adgar. Miracles de la Vierge, published by Brepols in 2012. In accordance with the book’s subtitle, “Dulce chose est de Deu cunter", J.-L. Benoit explores in detail this Anglo-Norman work in the tradition of literature of edification, as heir of the Latin clerical and hagiographic medieval literature, without renouncing the art and the pleasure of telling.
