This review is about two books which were already published some years ago (2000 and 2001). But their messages have not aged since the date of publication. The picture which Jean-Marc Berlière and the contributors to the book he co-edited with Denis Peschanski, have drawn of the role of the French police(s) during this crucial period of French and European history has not been reworked decisively by any other historian in recent years. But there is more than French police history in the books...
