“Second instalment”, as Damisch describes the two stout Dubuffet volumes. They are the sequel to the volumes published in 1967, when the artist was still alive, which, in their preface, gave him the nickname Robinson. He was fond of this name, as is evident from a sad but beautiful concluding letter, written to the publisher: “No more islands at this point, the isle engulfed. No more Robinson. This is he dismal message you will find in the bottle.” So Damisch has finally handed Dubuffet over....
