Introduction au concept d’acte cybercartographique : genèse d’un atlas cybercartographique

La cybercartographie a pour ambition de repenser la manière d’appréhender la cartographie sur Internet. Elle correspond à une approche interdisciplinaire qui se caractérise notamment par la combinaison d’innovations technologiques et de réflexions critiques relatives aux fonctions sociales des cybercartes. Cette approche novatrice est introduite dans cet article à travers la présentation de la genèse d’un atlas cybercartographique de l’Antarctique. Cette présentation permet tout d’abord d’illustrer les principales caractéristiques des atlas cybercartographiques : multi sensorialité, interopérabilité, évolutivité et modularité. Elle permet ensuite d’amorcer une réflexion sur la nécessité d’envisager la cybercarte en tant qu’artefact, c’est-à-dire en tant que résultante d’un processus complexe et subjectif. L’intégration de ce processus, c’est-à-dire de la genèse, dans l’artefact cybercartographique est plus spécialement discutée en s’inspirant de travaux comparables menés dans le domaine des arts et notamment dans celui de la photographie. Le concept d’acte cybercartographique est alors proposé pour signifier qu’il ne nous est plus possible de penser l’artefact cybercarte sans intégrer l’acte dont il découle.

Cybercartography aims to rethink the way we design, use and disseminate maps on the Internet. It represents an interdisciplinary approach combining art and science, technological change and critical perspectives. This original approach is introduced in this paper through the presentation of the genesis of the Cybercartographic Atlas of Antarctica. This presentation illustrates the main characteristics of cybercartographic atlases: multisensory function, interoperability, modularity and ability to evolve. This presentation generates a discussion about the importance of rethinking the cybercartographic artifact as the outcome of a complex and subjective production process. Drawing on similar works done in different fields such as photography, the concept of “cybercartographic act” is then proposed to demonstrate that the artifact is inseparable from the act of which it is the result and that cybermaps could depict this association.
