Les monts Mandara à la frontière entre le Nigéria et le nord du Cameroun sont l’une des régions du bassin tchadien qui a le plus souffert des déprédations de Boko Haram. Cependant, pour les habitants, cette violence n’est pas nouvelle : ils reconnaissent instantanément en Aboubakar Shekau, leader présumé de Boko Haram, un autre ennemi redouté du passé en la personne d’Haman Yaji. Ce dernier était un chef peul qui, au tournant du xxe siècle, a parcouru la région pour capturer des esclaves. Dans cet article, nous examinons la manière dont les populations locales racontent la violence contemporaine associée à Boko Haram et y réfléchissent, et comment elles établissent des parallèles avec les raids d’esclaves du passé, en se concentrant sur l’histoire d’Haman Yaji et la façon dont ce dernier traitait les jeunes femmes.

The Mandara Mountains on the border between Nigeria and North Cameroon are one of the regions that have suffered severely from the depredations of Boko Haram. However, for the inhabitants this plight is nothing new: they instantly recognize in its leader Abubakar Shekau another feared enemy from the deep past, Haman Yaji. This Fulbe chief was an Islamic slave raider at the turn of the twentieth century who scourged the area, searching for and capturing slaves. In this article, we examine the ways local people recount and think about the violence associated with the Boko Haram insurgency, and how they draw parallels with the past slave-raiding’s by zooming in on the history of Haman Yaji, and the way he treated young women.
