À la bibliothèque municipale de Rouen se trouve une édition oubliée du premier traité de prédication, accompagné de sermons, de Samuel Chappuzeau (1625-1701), polygraphe français de confession réformée. La particularité de Chappuzeau en la matière est qu’il n’était pas pasteur. Cet ouvrage d’« amateur », c’est-à-dire de non-professionnel de la chaire, que nous examinons, non comme élément isolé, mais pris dans une chaîne de réécriture et de publication, nous apparaît intéressant à deux titres. Dans la mesure où il questionne la légitimité d’une parole non institutionnalisée, la manière dont elle se présente est assurément importante. Ensuite, dans la mesure où il met en lumière une pratique particulière, nous étudions les procédés de réécriture, d’amplification, de republication, comme caractéristiques principales de la pratique de cet amateur, statut auquel Chappuzeau, écrivain longtemps méprisé, a toujours été renvoyé.

It is at the public library of Rouen that a forgotten edition of Samuel Chappuzeau’s (1625-1701) first treatise on preaching, with its sermons, can be found. He was a French polygraph who joined the Reformed confession. In this subject, Chappuzeau’s distinctive characteristic is that he was not a minister. We are studying this work by an “amateur writer”, in other words by a non-professional user of the pulpit, not as an isolated component but as part of a chain of rewriting and publishing. It seemed interesting to us for two reasons. Insofar as he brings up the question of how legitimate a viewpoint from outside the establishment can be, the way in which he presents those viewpoints certainly is important. Then, insofar as he brings to light a specific writing practice, we explore the rewriting, amplification and republishing processes as the main features of an amateur writer’s work, a status to which Chappuzeau, as a writer who was looked down upon for a long time, was always identified with.
