Tolerance, integrity, plurality—these are some of the ideals that Thomas Sankara had in mind when he changed the name of the former French colony of Upper Volta to Burkina Faso. The word burkĩna derives from the Mooré language (Fr.: hommes intègres), while faso is Dioula (Fr.: pays).
