Mary Queen of Scots as Feminine and National Icon: Depictions in Film and Fiction

This article focuses on twentieth and twenty-first century depictions of Mary Queen of Scots in film and fiction. It examines the ways in which Mary’s story is presented and in what manner the myths surrounding her personality and actions are either upheld or deconstructed. While the article demonstrates that modern portrayals of Mary tend to follow the long tradition of seeing her as a version of femininity, Mary’s position as a symbol of the victimization of Scotland by England is also discussed where relevant, along with her presentation as a Catholic martyr.

Cet article s’intéresse aux manifestations littéraires et cinématographiques aux xxe et xxie siècles de Marie Stuart, reine d’Écosse. Il examine la manière dont les représentations historiques de Marie Stuart se construisent à travers la fiction afin d’analyser comment les mythes autour de sa personnalité et de ses actes se consolident ou, au contraire, s’infirment. Nous affirmons que les portraits contemporains de Marie Stuart ont surtout tendance à se conformer à une vieille tradition qui la pose comme symbole de la féminité. Cependant, nous analysons également sa valeur symbolique en tant qu’image d’une nation écossaise dominée par l’Angleterre ou en tant que martyre catholique.
