Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill once described the act of writing poetry in Irish as an act akin to placing a baby in a basket and setting it downstream, in the hope that it would find some “iníon Fharoinn”, “Pharaoh’s daughter” (trans. Paul Muldoon).
