Cet article procède à une relecture de l’œuvre de Placide Rambaud à la lumière des aspects paradoxaux de sa trajectoire intellectuelle et sociale. Réinsérés dans le double mouvement d’autonomisation et de spécialisation thématique de la sociologie, les travaux de ce chercheur ont participé de façon singulière à la genèse de la sociologie rurale. Cette originalité est moins à chercher dans le contraste qu’offre l’œuvre de Placide Rambaud avec celle d’Henri Mendras que dans des réaffiliations sociologiques s’inspirant tout autant de Frédéric Le Play que des courants du catholicisme social, sans jamais toutefois renoncer à l’approche durkheimienne. Au nom de la justice sociale qu’il appelait de ses vœux, Placide Rambaud a donné aux entrepreneurs agricoles une fonction centrale dans l’accès à la parité sociale, dans l’invention de solidarités et dans la construction de la Communauté européenne.

Intellectual affiliations and social hope: the figure and works of Placide RambaudThis interpretation sets Placide Rambaud’s work in the light of the paradoxical aspects of his intellectual and social biography. In the context of the increasing autonomy and thematic specialization of sociology, Rambaud’s research exerted a special influence on rural sociology at its origins. This originality has less to do with the contrast between Rambaud’s and Henri Mendras’s work than with the sociological re-affiliations inspired by Le Play and by currents of social Catholicism – without, however, giving up a Durkheimian approach. For the sake of a much hoped-for social justice, Rambaud assigned agricultural entrepreneurs a key role in the access to "social parity", the invention of solidarities and the construction of the European Community.
