The Image of the Enemy in Ukrainian Wartime Songs (2022–2023)

This study analyses Ukrainian songs from 2022–2023, focusing on the portrayal of the enemy, a central figure in war-themed songs. Originating from folklore genres, the enemy embodies negative qualities related to ordeal, harm, and death. The paper explores the enemy image in terms of nomination, emotional comprehension, plot development, and correlation with other negative value-laden images. Utilizing narrative, motif, and contextual analysis, the research aims to comprehensively characterize the enemy image in Ukrainian songs.Six enemy image varieties are identified: chthonic enemies, barbarians, carriers of deadly diseases, figures associated with Christian motifs, historical adversaries, and those threatening the Ukrainian national identity. The negative connotation of the image of the enemy is actualized at all levels, first and foremost at the level of the plot, which serves to develop the corresponding narrative model.The linguistic persona of the enemy is reflected in a connotative background dominated by negative, satirical, or neutral pragmatic speech genres. The analysis concludes that the enemy is represented from various angles, manifesting in thorough stylistic development. The enemy image’s characteristics represent anti‑values, influenced by the fusion of mythopoetic, heroic, and Christian worldviews. The enemy is strongly conceptualized with a sensual component, emphasizing fear, anger, and hatred. The destructive nature of this fear is highlighted through associations with concepts like monster, murder, and sin, presenting the enemy as a singular anti‑value.

Cette étude analyse les chansons ukrainiennes de 2022‑2023, mettant l’accent sur la représentation de l’ennemi, figure centrale des chansons de guerre. Issu des genres folkloriques, l’ennemi incarne des qualités négatives liées à l’épreuve, au mal et à la mort. L’article explore son image en termes de nomination, compréhension émotionnelle, développement de l’intrigue, et corrélation avec d’autres images négatives. Utilisant une analyse narrative, motivante et contextuelle, la recherche vise à caractériser de manière exhaustive l’image de l’ennemi dans les chansons ukrainiennes.Six variétés d’images d’ennemis sont identifiées : chthoniens, barbares, porteurs de maladies, figures chrétiennes, adversaires historiques, et menaces à l’identité nationale. La connotation négative est accentuée, notamment dans l’intrigue, conduisant à l’élaboration d’un modèle narratif.La personnalité linguistique de l’ennemi se reflète dans un contexte connotatif dominé par des genres de discours négatifs, satiriques ou pragmatiques neutres. L’analyse conclut que l’ennemi est représenté sous différents angles, avec un développement stylistique approfondi. Ses caractéristiques représentent des anti‑valeurs, influencées par la fusion des visions du monde mythopoétique, héroïque et chrétienne. L’ennemi est conceptualisé avec une forte composante sensuelle, mettant en avant la peur, la colère et la haine, soulignant sa nature destructrice par des associations avec des concepts tels que le monstre, le meurtre et le péché, présentant l’ennemi comme une anti‑valeur singulière.

АНОТАЦІЯ (УКРАЇНСЬКОЮ МОВОЮ)У цьому дослідженні аналізуються українські пісні 2022–2023 років, зосереджуючись на образі ворога, центральної фігури пісень на воєнну тематику. Походячи з фольклорних жанрів, ворог уособлює негативні якості, пов’язані з поневіряннями, шкодою, смертю. У статті досліджується образ ворога з точки зору номінації, емоційного осмислення, розвитку сюжету та співвідношення з іншими негативно-ціннісними образами. За допомогою наративного, мотивного та контекстуального аналізу дослідження спрямоване на комплексну характеристику образу ворога в українських піснях.Виділено шість різновидів образів ворогів: хтонічні вороги, варвари, носії смертельних хвороб, постаті, пов’язані з християнськими мотивами, історичні супротивники, які загрожують українській національній ідентичності. Негативний відтінок образу ворога особливо підкреслюється в сюжеті, який становить основу відповідної наративної моделі українських пісень.Мовна особа ворога відображається на конотативному тлі, де домінують негативні, сатиричні чи нейтрально-прагматичні мовленнєві жанри. Аналіз показує, що образ ворога характеризується стильовою різноманітністю. Він репрезентує антицінності, які є результатом злиття міфопоетичного, героїчного та християнського світоглядів. Серед чуттєвих компонентів образу ворога переважають страх, гнів і ненависть. Його деструктивна природа підкреслюється через асоціації з такими поняттями, як чудовисько, вбивство та гріх, представляючи ворога як суцільну антицінність.
