Découverte d’un niveau marin biologique sur les quais de Portus : le port antique de Rome

Certains organismes marins vivent fixés sur les quais des ports actuels. La limite supérieure des peuplements médiolittoraux définit le niveau marin biologique. De telles faunes fixées viennent d’être découvertes sur les quais du port antique de Rome, le Portus, construit au ier et iie s. ap. J.-C. sur le littoral du delta du Tibre. Ce niveau marin biologique antique apporte quatre informations géoarchéologiques fondamentales. (1) Sa datation au radiocarbone, 2115 ± 30 BP soit 230 à 450 ap. J.-C., indique la phase ultime de connexion entre la mer et les bassins portuaires. (2) Sa position 80cm sous le zéro biologique actuel indique, avec précision, une hausse relative de 80 ±10cm du niveau marin depuis le iiie / ve s. ap. J.-C. (3) La différence altimétrique entre cet ancien niveau marin et les données stratigraphiques des carottages apporte des informations sur les paléoprofondeurs. Ainsi, à l’entrée du bassin hexagonal de Trajan, la profondeur était de 7m. (4) La présence ou l’absence de faunes fixées signifie un contact ou non des moles avec la mer et renseigne sur la configuration, encore mal connue, de Portus.

Marine shells, known as sessils, live fixed on present day harbour quays. The upper limit of this belt (vermetids, balanus) delineates biological sea level. This type of fixed fauna has been identified on the quays of the ancient harbour of Rome, Portus, built during the 1st and 2nd centuries AD on the coast of the Tiber delta. The ancient biological sea-level yields four strands of geoarcheological data. (1) Dated to 2115 ± 30 BP (230 to 450 AD) using radiocarbon, the belt indicates the final phase of connection between the sea and the basins. (2) Its position below current biological sea-level shows an 80 ± 10cm relative sea-level rise since the 3rd/4th centuries AD. (3) The altimetric difference between the ancient sea-level and the statigraphic data of the cores provides information on the palaeo-depth, which was -7m at the entrance of the hexagonal basin of Trajan. (4) The presence or absence of fixed fauna indicates the existence or not of a contact between the moles and the sea. It also gives information on the configuration of Portus, which remains poorly understood.

Alcuni organismi marini, detti sessili, vivono fissati lungo i moli dei porti odierni. Il limite superiore di questa macrofauna (vermeti, balani, ostriche) corrisponde al livello marino biologico. Esemplari di questo tipo di macrofauna sono stati scoperti fissati lungo i moli del porto antico di Roma, Portus, fondato tra il I ed II secolo d.C. nel litorale del delta del Tevere. Da questo antico livello marino biologico possono desumersi importanti informazioni geoarcheologiche. (1) La sua datazione al radiocarbonio 2115 ± 30 BP, ossia tra il 230 ed il 450 d.C., indica l’ultima fase di connessione tra il mare ed i bacini portuali. (2) La sua posizione a -80 cm sotto lo zero biologico attuale indica con precisione un’aumento relativo del livello marino di 80±10cm a partire dal III / V secolo d.C. (3) La differenza altimetrica tra l’antico livello marino e i dati stratigafici dei sondaggi dà informazioni sulle paleoprofondità. Per esempio, all’ingresso del bacino esagonale di Traiano, la profondità era di 7m. (4) La presenza o l’assenza di fauna fissata nei moli suggerisce le zone di contatto con il mare e contribuisce a definire la configurazione, ancora poco conosciuta, di Portus.
