Until only recently, focus on local history was considered a limitation of a study. In Russian and Soviet traditional historiography such a study would have been named kraevedcheskaia rabota, meaning a non-academic, even unprofessional one. With the advancement of the micro history and local history approaches at the turn of the 21st century, historical research has dramatically changed its focus and goals.
