On partira d’une « faute de grammaire » dans le dernier chapitre de Jane Eyre, un pronom réfléchi complément placé en position de sujet grammatical et dépourvu d’antécédent, et l’on tentera de montrer que ce malheur grammatical est en réalité un bonheur stylistique. Pour ce faire, on relira l’histoire du marqueur, on fera appel à la philosophie du langage du linguiste soviétique Valentin Volochinov, on aura recours au concept de « structure de sentiments » élaboré par Raymond Williams (ce qui impliquera une comparaison avec l’usage de pronoms réfléchis dans Mansfield Park de Jane Austen) et aux analyses de l’identité personnelle dans un article d’Etienne Balibar.

The essay starts from a “gross grammatical mistake” in the last chapter of Jane Eyre: a reflexive pronoun used as grammatical subject, without any antecedent. The aim of the essay is to show that this is not a grammatical blemish but a stylistic asset. It does so by revisiting the history of reflexive pronouns, by analysing the occurrence in the terms of the philosophy of language of the Soviet linguist Valentin Volochinov, by having recourse to Raymond Williams’s concept of “structures of feeling” (this involves a comparison with the use of reflexive pronouns in Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park) and to Etienne Balibar’s essay of personal identity.
