La notion de terroir est typiquement française. Ce mot n’a pas de traduction dans d’autres langues. Il a été défini par les géographes ruralistes dès le début du XXe siècle. Depuis cette date, ce concept a été affiné : on distingue aujourd’hui nettement la composante issue des données physiques de celle issue des données humaines. De plus, son approche peut être effectuée à des échelles différentes. On a donc distingué des « terroirs » composés par plusieurs « unités homogènes de terroirs ». En Champagne ces deux notions peuvent être différenciées. Le « terroir » champenois correspond à l’ensemble du vignoble dont la localisation s’explique par des conditions naturelles et des conditions historiques. Il est composé d’une multitude « d’unités homogènes de terroirs » dont la distinction est indispensable pour le choix du matériel végétal, le choix des pratiques culturales et des aménagements.

The “terroir” is a typically French notion. There is no translation of this word in an other language. It was defined by the French geographers in the beginning of the XXth century. After, this concept was refined: today, the natural conditions and the human conditions were distinguished. It’s also possible to study this concept with different scales and we distinguish “terroir” and “homogenous unites of terroir”. The example of Champagne show the two notions. The “terroir” is corresponding at the whole vineyard and is explained by the naturals conditions and the history. The vast number of “homogenous units of terroir” can be used as a guide for the choice of vegetable material, of agricultural practice, and planning of the slopes.

« Terroir » ist ein typisch französischer Begriff. Es gibt keine Übersetzung dieses Wortes in andere Sprachen. Dieser Begriff wurde am Anfang des 20. Jhs. von den Kulturlandschaftsforschern definiert. Seit dieser Zeit wurde er erläutert. Er besteht aus einer physischen Seite und einer kulturgeographischen Seite.Er kann an unterschiedlichen Maßstäben charakterisiert werden. « Terroirs », die aus mehreren homogenen « unités de terroirs » bestehen, werden unterschieden. In der Champagne können diese beiden Begriffe unterschieden werden. Der so genannte « terroir » der Champagne entspricht dem gesamten Weingebiet, dessen Lage in Verbindung mit den Naturverhältnissen und der Geschichte steht. Er besteht aus einer großen Anzahl homogenen unités de terroirs, die sehr wichtig für die Wahl der Rebsorten, der Weinbautechnik und der Ausstattung sind.
