Professeur de sociologie à l'Université américaine de Beyrouth, Sari Hanafi préside depuis 2018 l’International Sociological Association (ISA) et a été vice-président du Conseil arabe pour les Sciences Sociales. Ses analyses s’inscrivent dans différents domaines : la sociologie des migrations, la sociologie politique, la politique de la recherche, et la sociologie des religions. Au regard du sujet du présent numéro, les travaux qu’il a menés sur la circulation des savoirs et des intellectuels dans les mondes arabophones nous semblaient particulièrement intéressants. Citons deux de ses livres : Knowledge Production in the Arab World: The Impossible Promise, co-écrit avec Rigas Arvanitis (2016, Routledge) et The Future of the Social Science in the Arab World, co-édité avec N. Ben Ghreit-Ramoun and M. Mustafa (2014, CAUS). Dans ce même effort de favoriser les échanges entre traditions sociologiques nationales, il a également coordonné, avec Chin-Chun Yi (伊慶春) sociologue taiwanaise, l’ouvrage Sociologies in Dialogue (2019, Sage), dont les réflexions dépassent les mondes arabophones. Du fait de son travail de sociologue, de son parcours personnel et de son mandat à la tête de l'ISA, Sari Hanafi se trouve dans une posture d’observateur et d’acteur qui permet d’éclairer certains enjeux de ce numéro spécial. C’est pour cela que nous proposons ici un dialogue avec l’équipe de coordination de la revue, afin de confronter le point de vue du chercheur aux dynamiques d’internationalisation de la sociologie contemporaine et à la place singulière qu’y occupe la production sociologique française. Cet échange, basé sur son intervention dans le cadre du congrès 2019 de l’AFS (Aix-en-Provence), a été en partie l’occasion d’expliciter le concept de « sociologie globale », que Sari Hanafi pose comme un horizon d’attente désirable en termes d’internationalisation de la discipline sociologique.

Professor of Sociology at the American University of Beirut, Sari Hanafi has served as President of the International Sociological Association (ISA) since 2018 and as Vice President of the Arab Council for the Social Sciences. His analyses fall into different fields: the sociology of migration, political sociology, research policy, and the sociology of religion. With regard to the subject of this issue, his work on the circulation of knowledge and intellectuals in the Arabic-speaking world seemed to us particularly interesting. In this same perspective to foster exchanges between national sociological traditions, he also coordinated, with Taiwanese sociologist Chin-Chun Yi (伊慶春), the book Sociologies in Dialogue (2019, Sage), whose reflections go beyond the Arabic-speaking worlds. Because of his work as a sociologist, his career, and his mandate as head of ISA, Sari Hanafi is in a position of observer and actor that helps to illuminate some of the issues in this special issue. This is why we publish this dialogue with the journal's coordinating team, in order to confront the researcher's point of view with the dynamics of internationalization of the contemporary sociology and the singular place that French sociological production occupies in it. This exchange, based on his intervention during the 2019 AFS conference (Aix-en-Provence), was also an opportunity to explain the concept of "global sociology", which Sari Hanafi posits as a desirable horizon of expectation in terms of the internationalization of the sociological discipline.
