We have of Proust the image of the Great Writer, accomplishing alone and in the night of his room the masterful writing of his book. A careful reading of the correspondence, of the notebooks of “Noms de pays” (1912) and the discovery of an unknown version of the second proofs of Du côté de chez Swann annotated by Louis de Robert shows that the novel was sometimes written in several hands and that if Proust can “obéir seulement à [lui]-même”, he writes his book under the fruitful gaze of others.
